This is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Tinta Barocca and Touriga National sourced from seven vineyards on Badenhorst family’s Kalmoesfontein farm in Swartland, South Africa. This is the 14th release of this wine; the 2019 vintage has a bright red/purple colour with attractive, complex notes of black cherries, liquorice, spice and raspberries. On the palate there are masses of red and black berry fruit flavours with excellent balance of moderate alcohol, concentration and ripe, dry tannins. This is a delicious, characterful wine made by one of South Africa’s star winemakers.
From three generations of winemaking stock, cousins Adi and Hein Badenhorst brought this humble vineyard in the Paardeberg complete with gnarled vines and a run-down winery. Winemaker Adi is now one of the leading players in ‘The Swartland Revolution’, a group of pioneering young winemakers making wines from the amazing raw materials that are part of the Swartland’s grape-growing legacy – a legacy that dates back centuries. Described as back to basics winemaking using traditional winemaking equipment to produce natural wines of the best possible quality; Adi makes wines to drink. His Secateurs range has become a benchmark for quality and price, and form the cornerstone of his range. The Family Red & White are more serious wines, field blends that reveal all of the subtlety and nuance that the Swartland has to offer, and show in beautiful detail just how amazing Swartland’s old vines can be. Recently, Adi has started experimenting more with small parcels of vines to produce special cuvées of varietal wine. These cuvées are made in very small quantities, showing off the subtler charms of Cinsault, Palomino, Steen (Chenin Blanc) and Grenache. 11.5% ABV.
