The Blank Bottle winery is based in Somerset West. Cape Town, in South Africa. It is the brainchild of Pieter Walser, who owns no vineyards but buys grapes from vineyards across the Western Cape. This gives him the flexibility each year to develop new wines without being bound to one vineyard site. Pieter’s approach is unique, every year there are a different number of wines, sometimes 20, sometimes between 30 and 40! The best wines, however, stay in his range and are made every year, Orbitofrontal Cortex being one!
Orbitofrontal Cortex 2020 is a blend of 10 different grapes: Verdelho, Palomino, Weisser Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Chenin blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier. It’s atypical for many New World wines in that, at the start, the aromas are delicate, a mix of apple, fresh dough, citrus and pear. The palate is richer, with a huge array of flavours as expected from so many different grape varieties, but the firm acidity means this is light on it’s feet and refreshing, with a saline character alongside the fruitier notes. Complex, structured to last should you be patient enough, dry and with masses of flavour that unfurls over time in the glass. A fascinating wine! 13.5% ABV.
