SUMMER SELECTION; An eclectic choice of whites to accompany the warmer weather and enjoy with friends and family this summer! Stephane Defraine’s excellent white Bordeaux blend from Chateau de Fontenille with it’s sublime purity of fruit and lingering depth and complexity is one to partner with an afternoon BBQ, preferably with freshly grilled vegetables and cheese. Then from the Marche region in Central Italy comes the Bucci family’s Verdicchio; packed with notes of lemon, grapefruit and nutty complexity, this is one to be enjoyed and savoured and is certainly a step above the usual bulk produced wines from this region. The Shaw and Smith’M3′ Chardonnay is a cult classic; elegant and subtle coming from the Adelaide Hills of Southern Australia which utilises both wild yeasts and barrel fermentation to accentuate the rich flavours of white flowers, citrus and a slightly smoky finish. Next up we have the Martin Codax Albarino from the Galicia region of northwestern Spain and rarely do we come across a wine which encapsulates its origins as well as this. With vibrant acidity, notes of peach, grapefruit and a subtle minerality that brings to mind windswept coasts, we’d enjoy this with fresh fish! From the stunning Alsace region, we have Severin Schlumberger’s fresh and well rounded Pinot Blanc which demonstrates the area isn’t just about gastronomic sensations, and while this isn’t as aromatic as a Riesling or Gewurtztraminer, it offers a great introduction to this part of France. Finally we have the Macon Villages from Terres Secretes, a collective formed of 35 different winemakers in the Maconnais region of Burgundy. With it’s lovely lemon colour and beautiful stone fruit aromas of peach, apricot plus some citrus, it’s fresh, summery and very appealing and offers excellent value. Tasting notes, a guide to the region and producer will accompany this selection.
