WINTER SELECTION: Enjoy Faiveley’s classic White Burgundy, a brilliantly versatile wine that matches many foods, or drinks well as an aperitif. Or try Pieropan’s benchmark Soave Classico, which shows what really great Soave can taste like. For a thirst-quenching, fine, delicious Sancerre, try Domaine Vincent Pinard’s lovely Flores 2018, match with goats cheeses or drink it as a refreshing foil to heavier starters in winter. For a fruitier, fuller wine, Schlumberger’s unique Pinot Gris from Alsace is hard to beat, and you can pair this with a variety of cheeses or poultry dishes to make the most of Alsace’s gastronomic potential. Then to New Zealand for a comparison with another Pinot Gris, the Seddon vineyard by Villa Maria. This is a large Kiwi producer who normally makes Sauvignon Blanc that you may have seen across the high street, but for something different their full-bodied, peachy Pinot Gris is brilliant served chilled well. Lastly, Kumeu River’s iconic Estate Chardonnay 2019. This is the estate that regularly tops the polls of best white wines in New Zealand, and is great to taste in half bottle but you can also pair it with seafood pastas or creamier dishes, or for a tasting at home, compare it to Faiveley’s Burgundy, also a Chardonnay.
