Who makes this and where is it made?

Andrea Costanti and family have farmed this small estate for more than 200 years. The wines are impressive and capable of ageing for decades if desired, but we think they're delicious now, especially in this half bottle! Vineyards are in the northern part of Montalcino which is hillier and higher in altitude, which leads to cooler temperatures, and a freshness in the wines.

Tasting notes

Brunello is the name for a particular clone of the Tuscan Sangoviese grape when it's grown in Montalcino. This Brunello is fragrant, with cassis, cherry and spice notes. Local regulations stipulate that Brunello di Montalcino must age in wooden barrels for three years before another year in bottle. Added to the pure fruit character, this has given a delightful intensity of herbs, clove and the tiniest hint of liquorice. Ageing in oak also smoothes the tannins meaning a soft, mellow feel to the palate

Ideas for drinking/food matching

This Brunello di Montalcino has plenty of natural tannin structure to match protein rich dishes, nut-based savoury meals too. The herb and spice character will complement gamier, earthier characters in food as well, but the smooth, lingering finish and general mellow feel means we'd probably grab a book, sit in the warm and drink this all by itself!
