Description

The Monte Velho 2021 is an excellent Portuguese white wine that belies its very modest price tag. It’s made from a blend of Antao Vaz, Perrum, and Roupeiro grape varieties, all giving a fresh bouquet of white flowers, citrus, and providing a textured,  ripe palate, with a long clean finish. This wine drinks beautifully on its own, or pairs well with light tapas, or delicate grilled sardines with lemon and herbs. A fantastic summer white wine to drink now or hold for until next year, at a great price!  13%ABV

Esporao is the name of the estate where Monte Velho is made, which is entirely owned by the Roquette family since 1989. The landscape is typical of the Alentejo region, rolling plains, shallow valleys, occasional streams, vineyards, and olive groves. Esporao vineyards are in the heart of Reguengos de Monsaraz, about 170 kilometres from Lisbon, in Portugal. The history of Herdade do Esporao’s estate goes back 700 years. The boundaries were first established in 1267, today Esporao is one of the leading wineries in Portugal and they have over 400 hectares of vineyards as well as using grapes from throughout the region, the result is partnerships lasting over 15 years with suppliers from the different sub-regions, who use the same integrated production system as Esporao. These sustainable practices, which preclude the use of pesticides and herbicides, are crucial to soil health and fertility.
