Massolino Barolo 2017 HALF (37.5cl)

Red, Piemonte, Italy

This classic Barolo from Franco Massolino shows exactly why the Barolo area in northwest Italy has such a good reputation as being home to one of Italy’s best wines (Barolo is often known as the ‘King of Wines’), if far from being the cheapest. Made from the Nebbiolo grape variety from the critical acclaimed 2017 vintage, this is ready to drink now if you decant it or will last for years, even in half bottle, in cool, dark conditions. The Nebbiolo variety is deceptively moderate in colour but has powerful flavours and fairly high alcohol with noticeable tannins. This has dark berry fruits, mixed herbs, spice and black tea.

Barolo is in Piemonte (or Piedmont, literally meaning foot of the mountain (a nod to the nearby Alps), which is a wine region in Italy’s Northwest, tucked under Milan and just above Genoa. The name Barolo refers to both the wine, and the town Barolo itself. It’s also close to the town of Bra, home to the SlowFood movement, and it really is a food and wine destination, with its autumn truffle season, and excellent cheese and wines. A great place to visit if you are travelling through Italy. Franco Massolino and family are based in Serralunga d’Alba, which makes particularly long-lived Barolo. See for more. It’s still a young wine so pour into a jug or decant for a few hours before serving, or match it with steaks or heartier lentil dishes. 14.5% ABV.
