Who makes this and where is it made? | Made by Qupe's founder Bob Lindquist in the Central Coast; the large catch-all area for vineyards that lie above Santa Barbara and below San Francisco. In theory it should be a very warm winegrowing area, with correspondingly very ripe, full-bodied wines, but many of the vineyards lie in a valley which unusually runs from West to East, and acts as a funnel, pulling in Pacific sea breezes and cooling the vines. Bob therefore describes this as a 'cool-climate wine'. |
Tasting notes | Dark red colour. Spicy, cherry, cassis and a tiny hit of mocha too. This is incredibly smooth and full with lovely juicy berry fruit and a long, lingering finish. Delicious. |
Drink dates | Now till Spring 2022 |
Ideas for drinking/food matching | A fine, full-bodied wine that is satisfying, rich and smooth but never heavy. It's a great autumn/winter wine on a rainy day. Matches more powerful stews, red meats and lentil dishes. This is drinking well now but it will store well for a special occasion too. |

Technical Details | This wine is a blend of 81% Syrah, 9% Grenache, 8% Mourvedre and 2% Tempranillo. The various lots of grapes were fermented using a combination of small open top fermenters with punchdown, and larger closed top tanks using pump overs. French oak barriques (mostly neutral) were used to mature the wine for approximately 16 months. Just prior to the 2016 Harvest, the wine was blended, lightly fined using egg whites and bottled in early 2017. |
