A delicious red from Pauillac, in the Medoc region of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, this is the brilliant second wine from Chateau Pichon Lalande. Full of blackberry and raspberry flavours, with hints of clove, damsons, mint, cedar and spice, this is a complex, rich wine with an elegant profile and long finish, backed up by the tannins you’d expect from a Bordeaux. It’s nice and open now, but would still benefit from an hour’s decanting, and will keep for another five years if you can wait!

The original estate was initially founded in 1689 by Pierre de Mazure de Rauzan, but the land has been divided up over the years. Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville took over the estate from de Rauzan’s daughter and he managed the land for many years. In 1850, just before he died, he split the vineyards up: one for his sons (now Chateau Pichon Baron) and one for his daughters. This was eventually taken over completely by his daughter Virginie who married Count Henri de Lalande, making her a Comtesse, and so Chateau Pichon Lalande was named! With her passion and hard work, Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande acquired the statues of 2nd Cru Classe in 1855.

This wine would pair well with lamb dishes with lots of garlic and rosemary, as well as a classic Bordeaux match of beef – try beef rib roast. Decant for half an hour prior to serving if you open it now, or it will keep in half bottle for another five-eight years with ease. A rich and elegant left bank Bordeaux. 13% abv.
