Description

The Steading is a classic Rhone blend of Grenache, Shiraz (Syrah) and Mataro (Mourvedre) which at Torbreck, have an average vine age of over 100 years! The winemakers describe this wine as being the heart and soul of their wine making philosophy – it is constructed from 45 different parcels belonging to Torbreck and other producers across the Barossa Valley, and is combined to produce an exceptional example of why this region is so well suited to these traditionally old-world varieties. Generous and vibrant flavours including cranberry, pomegranate and wild raspberries harmoniously sit alongside a brooding body with silky tannins and a complex, yet elegant finish.

Torbreck was founded by David Powell, a former lumberjack, in the Barossa Valley area of Southern Australia in 1994. The focus here is on producing wines of exceptional quality using the classic Rhone varieties which were planted here over a hundred years ago by Europeans emigrating. These vines have survived the Phylloxera outbreak which devastated vast swathes of vineyards in Europe and America in the late 19th century and also the vine-pull scheme of the 1980’s. This saw many old traditional varieties uprooted in favour of the in-vogue Cabernet Sauvignon and cooler vineyard sites within Australia. It is these surviving old vines which contribute the depth and complexity to Torbreck wines. The Steading has superb savoury notes alongside the rich and fruit led palate which pairs superbly with herb sausages and a variety of meaty steaks. 15% ABV.
