Description

The Struie is made entirely from Shiraz grown in two specific vineyards, the first in the Barossa Valley and the other in Eden Valley. The latter is more well known for producing white wine (The Rieslings made here are some of the best in the world) due to its cooler climate and higher altitude. By combining these two sites, Torbreck are able to produce a wine with both elegance and intensity in equal measure. With lifted aromatics and notes of plum, plush and dense black fruits, this is a soft yet concentrated wine. Superb tannic structure holds the rich jammy fruits together alongside a background of dark chocolate and subtle spices.

Torbreck was founded by David Powell, a former lumberjack, in the Barossa Valley area of Southern Australia in 1994. The focus here is on producing wines of exceptional quality using the classic Rhone varieties which were planted here over a hundred years ago by Europeans emigrating. These vines have survived the Phylloxera outbreak which devastated vast swathes of vineyards in Europe and America in the late 19th century and also the vine-pull scheme of the 1980’s. This saw many old traditional varieties uprooted in favour of the in-vogue Cabernet Sauvignon and cooler vineyard sites within Australia. It is these surviving old vines which contribute the depth and complexity to Torbreck wines. The Struie is named after a mountain in North-East Scotland – which the view from is reminiscent of looking down over the Eden Valley. While slightly cliched, you can’t go wrong enjoying this with a BBQ; meats, vegetables and cheeses. 15% ABV.
