Description
For something different, try this 50cl bottle of Rathfinny’s English Sparkling Wine from Sussex (50cl is the size between half bottle and full, pouring 4 x 125ml glasses). It’s delicious (& beautifully packaged too!)
TASTING NOTE: A pale golden hue colour in glass. On the nose: there are enticing aromas of strawberry, almonds, pink grapefruit, apple and hints of fresh herbs. On the palate: further red fruit flavours (strawberries, raspberries and cranberries) plus crisp citrus, followed by a long, caramelised red apple finish. It’s medium in body, with smooth texture and refreshing, well-balanced natural acidity that marks out English wine in a blind tasting. It has a gentle biscuity note, which points to its two years’ ageing in cellar. Delicious!
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: This wine makes a wonderful aperitif, but for a food wine it is surprisingly versatile, matching salmon or trout to start, charcuterie, or for something a little later in the meal, hard cheeses. English sparkling also goes very well with seafood and battered foods such as fish and chips, the fresh acidity providing a great foil to the fat in the dish. Serve chilled, as you would with other sparkling, at around 7-10 degrees. Enjoy now or until end of 2026
ABOUT: Rathfinny Estate in East Sussex (near Alfriston) was founded in 2010 by husband and wife, Mark and Sarah Driver. Once a working arable farm, the first vines were planted in 2012 and today Rathfinny comprises over 200 acres of predominantly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. As well as being a stunning site, the Rathfinny vineyard is very good for growing sparkling wine grapes: the light, thin, clay loam soils over chalk are free draining and very similar to the Champagne region of France
