Description
Flavoursome, juicy red from the Cabernet Franc grape. It has a lovely herby, peppery nature, making it a great food wine. Chill the wine slightly in the warmer months, for a very refreshing style.
TASTING NOTE: A lovely ruby red colour in the glass. On the nose: Fresh, fragrant, herb and blackcurrant notes, with some leafiness and pepper, plus a hint of mineral/graphite. On the palate: It is medium to full in body with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and moderate alcohol of 13.6%. It’s dry and fruity with masses of flavour but not heavy; a youthful red wine that is a really great food match. Cabernet Franc often has a peppery, leafy character, which this has too. A great red for the warmer months; it can be slightly chilled for a more refreshing style.
FOOD PAIRING, STORAGE AND SERVICE: A lovely fresh red, with lots of black fruit and herb flavour. It drinks well without food or as an aperitif, and you can, similar to many Loire reds, chill it slightly to c.14 degrees for a refreshing red in the warmer months. It’s fairly versatile, and would work with lamb chops or other meat dishes that complement the herby nature of the wine. It’s perfect with lighter cured meats on a charcuterie board, with local cheeses such as Valencay, a goat cheese from the Loire Valley or either young or smelly cheese such as brie or camembert! Decant for an hour or so before serving. It will also keep till end 2027/early 2028.
ABOUT: Domaine Cognard lies in the village of Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgeuil, in the Loire Valley. It was founded by Max Cognard in 1974, with one hectare of vines (2.5 acres), and has grown considerably since, to 15 hectares, and gained Organic certification. Now, Estelle Cognard and her son Flavien farm in Saint-Nicolas de Bourgeuil and in the neighbouring village of Bourgeuil. Both villages have a vineyard appellation, so you’ll see excellent reds and rose wines bearing these names on the wine label, from the Cabernet Franc grape.
