Description

Fine, fresh and elegant white from Piedmont, and the famous Gaja family. Better known for their red wines from Barolo and Barbaresco vineyards, as well as their Tuscan estate, they also make this super, Burgundy-inspired Chardonnay,  which has a dash of Sauvignon to add herb and citrus notes.

TASTING NOTE: On the nose, there are delicious notes of melon and peach, along with floral aromas of elderflower and jasmine blossom. As the wine opens, citrus fruits and mixed herb notes reveal themselves. A vibrant, refreshing wine, with good natural acidity, a lovely fine texture and fairly full body, well balanced by the freshness. It’s harmonious, mouthwateringly good and long on the finish.

FOOD PAIRING, SERVING AND STORAGE: Pumpkin gnocchi with butter and sage is what the estate recommends, it sounds great to us! Also try pan-seared scallops, richer fish dishes or creamy cheeses such as Robiola, a Piedmontese specialty. For a vegan dish, truffle risotto is wonderful! The wine is great now and will drink well over the next 3-4 years.

ABOUT: Gaja are a famous wine producer based in the unique vineyards of Barbaresco, in the Langhe part of Piedmont. Founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 the estate is now run by the 4th and 5th generation, Angelo Gaja and children Gaia and Giovanni. Based in Barbaresco but with land in prime Tuscan vineyard areas, as well as a joint venture in Sicily’s Etna vineyards,  Angelo Gaja was an early promoter of single-vineyard wines, now known as ‘Crus’, following the Burgundy mould, making small quantities of exceptional quality wines with utmost care. Many would consider them, in the words of the Wine Spectator, ‘perhaps the finest Italian wines ever made’. This wine however is not a red, but their very fine white made from the Chardonnay grape (and a dash of Sauvignon Blanc), from both Barbaresco and Serralunga (in Barolo) vineyards (one vineyard is called Rossj and one is Bass, hence the name!). It is bottled as a ‘Langhe Doc’ wine, an appellation which encompasses both areas.
