Description
A legendary vintage from a Bordeaux, ‘First Growth’ estate, the 2005 Château Mouton Rothschild is a stunning wine, with two decades of age. 2005 was an exceptional year in Bordeaux, and this wine is very rarely found in this 37.5cl, half-bottle size. Owned by the Rothschild family since 1853, the Chateau’s wines are extremely collectible, particularly given the striking artist-designed labels, which are different each vintage. In 2005, the artist commissioned to design the label was Giuseppe Penone, a highly-respected Italian sculptor and pioneer of the ‘arte povera’ group, which is reflected on the wine’s very beautiful label. The half bottles have been shipped directly from the Chateau this year (in 2025) to our warehouse.
TASTING NOTE: In the glass, the 2005 Mouton has the attractive, reddish/garnet colour of aged Bordeaux. The nose is richly layered with primary, fruity notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, and graphite, along with the rich, tertiary, complex notes of age, such as spice, tobacco, truffle, cedar and game. The palate is powerful but (as always for this Chateau), impeccably balanced. It marries velvety tannins, freshness despite its age, with lingering berry fruit, spice and truffle flavours. 13.5% alcohol. A rare treat!
FOOD PAIRING, SERVICE AND STORING: A wine of immense depth this 2005 Mouton Rothschild is ready to enjoy after two decades of ageing at the Chateau. Ideal pairings include simple steak, shoulder of lamb or truffle dishes. Drink now; it is wonderful and delicious, but will keep another 5 years or so if required. It’s lovely, open and expressive, so there is no need to decant for aeration purposes, but you will need to stand the bottle for 24 hours to settle the sediment before serving.
ABOUT: Classified as a First Growth in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Chateau Mouton Rothschild has long stood at the pinnacle of Pauillac. The 2005 vintage is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, matured in 100% new French oak barrels. A wine of grandeur, it reflects both the power of the exceptional 2005 vintage and the finesse of this extraordinary terroir in Pauillac.
