Description
A juicy red Bordeaux from 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. It’s from the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux, meaning reasonable pricing and pure, moreish, red and black berry flavours in the glass. It’s a great choice for a Bordeaux that won’t break the bank but that will work for the table as well as a sipping Bordeaux over the evening.
TASTING NOTE: Bright red/purple colour with notes of cherry, black and red currant and vanilla spice. The palate is medium in body with generous alcohol of 14.5% but it’s still fresh and light on its feet. It’s very easy to drink with soft, plush tannins giving a smooth texture and medium, fresh finish.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: The Bellanger family suggest duck confit parmentier, beef burgers or for a veggie match, roasted figs with honey, burrata and pine nuts. Drink now or keep till 2027.
ABOUT: Chateau Roquefort is a 13th Century estate in Entre-Deux-Mers, the large wine area south of Saint Emilion (‘Entre-Deux-Mers’ literally means ‘between two seas’ and refers to the vineyard land between the Dordogne and Garonne rivers in Bordeaux). It’s now owned by the Bellanger family. As is typical for Entre-Deux-Mers (the go-to area for well-priced Bordeaux), Frederic and Anne Bellanger make cracking-value wines, including this fresh, juicy, fine-textured red. The estate is also a fantastic visit if you are ever in the area; the wines make for a great tasting plus Frederic’s emphasis on diversity of flora and fauna in the vineyards mean a luscious setting, and they also have beautiful old dovecote and chartreuse outbuildings to discover.
