Description

This is a white wine made by a producer we first bought from in 2007, the Mauroy family. It’s from the Pouilly Fume area situated in the Loire Region on the coast of Western France. Made from Sauvignon Blanc though quite different to the ever popular examples found in New Zealand which are typically more pungent with the focus on tropical fruit notes. Alongside Sancerre, which is situated on the opposite bank of bank of the Loire River and also specialises in Sauvignon Blanc, Pouilly Fume is one of the most revered appellations in France. Pouilly Fume is also often confused with Pouilly Fuisse which is in fact a town in Burgundy which produces fuller bodied and oaked wines made from Chardonnay!

This is a distinctly clean and crisp example of Sauvignon Blanc with notes of intense lemon, pear, subtle white flowers, and the tell-tale flintiness which is synonymous with wine from this area. ‘Fume’ means smoky, and it is this character which gained the wine its name. The estate is owned by the Mauroy family and historically sold much of their wine in bulk. However Katia, the daughter, now looks after the winemaking duties and the quality and reputation of the wine produced here has significantly improved. This is sensational alongside goats’ cheese and can be enjoyed with any lighter dishes. 13% ABV.
