Description
Typical juicy red Burgundy from the hillsides (Hautes Cotes) above the town of Beaune. It’s a light to medium-bodied style of Burgundy, not for long ageing but drinking over the next year or two while it’s lovely, fresh and fruity. Very moreish indeed.
TASTING NOTE: A simple, juicy Pinot Noir, a good example of red Burgundy, with fairly pale red colour in the glass. On the nose: fresh and gently fruity with lovely strawberry, raspberry and redcurrants, and fresh herbs too. On the palate: the wine is relatively light-bodied, but that doesn’t mean it is short on flavour. On the contrary, there are lots of summer fruits, with red berry flavours that are succulent and juicy on its medium to long finish. Dry and refreshing, with crisp acidity and soft, silky tannins, and an attractive fruity nature. Easy to drink, not heavy and can be chilled in summer.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING, SERVING: Burgundy is a versatile wine, not too heavy so it doesn’t tend to overpower food. It tends to have fresh, if not high acidity, which cuts through fatty dishes too. But with its low tannins, supple red fruits and juicy nature, it’s a great aperitif style; simple, vibrant Burgundies like this will also chill down well in summer. For food matches, try with roast chicken, roast pork or grilled aubergine dishes, or with young/raw/goats cheeses after the main meal. This is very easy to drink, and will wash down a good mushroom pizza easily, if you are looking for a simple but hearty alternative to a fancier meal.
ABOUT: Domaine du Prieure lies in the heart of the Cote de Beaune, in the pretty village of Savigny-les-Beaune (for those who have visited the town of Beaune, Savigny is ten minutes to the northeast, a very easy visit). Domaine du Prieure’s name refers to the 16th Century priory that was founded here by the monks of Citeaux, using it as a base to manage their vineyards. Today, the 31-hectare domaine is owned by Jean-Michel Maurice, the mayor of Savigny, along with his son Stephen. This wine is from their vineyards in the ‘Hautes Cotes’ ie just above Savigny.
