Description
This is a classic Amarone from three different Cru vineyards in the Valpolicella area (hence the name ‘3 Cru’ on the label). It’s a deep, rich, hearty wine with generous alcohol, that is packed with very pure berry flavour and spice. It’s a blend of five different Italian grapes, all giving complexity and fascinating flavours to the wine: Corvinone 45%, Corvina 20%, Rondinella 20%, Barbera 9% and Sangiovese 6%. The grapes are dried naturally over 5 months in the Rizzardi family’s old drying rooms in their winery in Negrar Valplicella. This gives the particularly concentrated style of this wine, with intense fruit flavours and 16% alcohol.
TASTING NOTE: A vibrant, deep, dark red colour with black hints. Notes of strawberry, cherry, chocolate ganache and spice leap out of the glass, followed by a full, rich palate. It’s supple and concentrated in flavour, with ripe tannins and a long, succulent finish. The alcohol for Amarone is always fairly high and this is no exception at 16%, so please bear this in mind, but it’s well balanced and presents as a warming, hearty wine with masses of fruit character and spice. The finish is satisfying and round with the faintest hint of sweetness as is typical for Amarone.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: This is a full, rich wine with warming alcohol, and so you may want to keep it for a cool evening rather than the heat of Summer! it’s lovely to sip over a few hours and enjoy the unique, concentrated, fruit-driven style of Amarone. It would also make a great match for grilled/barbecue meats as well as rich stews and casseroles. While it’s drunk as per a dry red, and matches with similar foods, the slight sweetness in the wine would make this a good pairing for curry pie or aubergine lasagne, if you are looking for a vegetarian match. Drink now or it will keep to 2028.
