Description

The ‘Route des Grands Crus’ runs through the heart of Burgundy from Dijon to Santenay and winds its way through some of the most spectacular (and pricey) vineyards in the world. Heading south, entering the Cote de Nuits region, the first iconic name one comes across is ‘Gevrey Chambertin’. The history of this world-famous appellation can be traced back to 630AD when a certain ‘Bertin’ emulated the local monks and began cultivating vines and producing wine. Made entirely from Pinot Noir, this is a powerful yet delicate wine with a beautiful ruby colour and intense fruit character including black cherry, blackberry and liquorice. There is an impressive subtlety to the use of oak within the wine, well integrated and helping develop additional complexity – sweet spice (nutmeg), leather and savoury notes of mushroom and gamey meats.

Joseph Drouhin, a Chablis native, arrived in Beaune at the heart of Burgundy in 1880 and founded the winery and negotiant business which is now in the hands of his four great grandchildren – Philippe, Veronique, Laurent and Frederic. This is superbly crafted with plenty of vibrant aromatic quality while retaining firm structure and a velvety texture. This compliments a strong cheese or game dish and will certainly develop further with age. 13.5% ABV.
