Description

The longest-ageing of the Cru Beaujolais, Moulin-a-Vent (its name refers to a 15th Century windmill, ‘moulin-a-vent’ that overlooks the vineyards) gives beautiful, structured wines that are floral and fruity in youth, and develop lovely complexity with age. This Drouhin Moulin-a-Vent rivals good Burgundy for finesse and pure, fresh red and black fruit flavour. A French classic!

TASTING NOTE:  The 2023 has a beautiful red/garnet colour. On the nose: there are intense and elegant aromas, with notes of rose, cherry, plum and a hint of liquorice. On the palate: this is a well-structured Cru Beaujolais, more akin to good red Burgundy than the simpler wines of the Beaujolais area. It’s juicy and flavoursome, medium to full in body with fine, supportive tannins. Long on the finish and very satisfying with lots of red and black fruit flavour. 13.5% alcohol.

FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: A well-structured wine that will match both white and red meats. Try particularly with roast chicken or game, mushroom crepes as well as bacon wrapped sausages or stuffed butternut squash. Drink now or keep up till 2028/2029.

ABOUT: Joseph Drouhin, a Chablis native, arrived in Beaune, the heart of Burgundy in 1880 and founded the winery and negociant business which is now in the hands of his four great-grandchildren: Philippe, Veronique, Laurent and Frederic who each play a different role in helping to grow the family wine companies in Burgundy and USA. With almost 200 acres of vines in Burgundy, they organically farm their own vineyards and purchase grapes from leading growers in the Burgundy region. Their Moulin a Vent is from the wine appellation of the same name, which is one of the oldest vineyards in Beaujolais, sitting high up on the hillside next to an ancient windmill (‘moulin a vent’), overlooking the pink granite soils that are so perfect for the Gamay grape.
