This superb Chardonnay from Shaw and Smith has been described as a ‘cult classic’ and it’s easy to see why. Named after the 3 ‘M’s’ who founded the original vineyard, Shaw and Smith founders; Martin Shaw, Michael Hill Smith MW and Michael’s brother Matthew. If you’ve previously had a bad experience with Aussie Chardonnay, we are confident this could win you over! This is a contemporary and elegant example of Australian Chardonnay utilising techniques such as wild yeasts and barrel fermentation to accentuate the rich flavours found in the grapes here. Packed with white flowers, citrus fruits, nectarine and smoky notes from the perfectly integrated oak, alongside refreshing acidity mean this is built to further develop with age.
Shaw and Smith were founded in 1989 in the Adelaide Hills area of Southern Australia. Being at high altitude compared to the surrounding plains, the region has one of the coolest climates in Australia and therefore grape varieties which can thrive in these conditions are the focus here: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The Chardonnays are particularly fine, and medium-bodied rather than especially full or heavy. The Lenswood vineyard from which the fruit for this wine was grown was planted in 1999 and purchased by cousins Martin and Michael in 2012. We enjoy this with a light vegetable risotto and dishes which incorporate a creamy sauce. 13.5% ABV.
