This 2020 Rausch Kabinett Riesling is a great example of youthful Saar Riesling, full of zesty fruit and floral fragrance. It’s a touch shy at first on the nose, then opens up to reveal orange blossom, yellow peach, candied grapefruit and tarragon. A kick of citrus acidity gives a mouthwatering freshness and ensures you are keen for another sip! It’s fairly light-bodied, modest in alcohol and incredibly easy to drink, with some sweetness on the finish that is offset by the acidity so it tastes more like a dry or off-dry wine. A great aperitif to sip without food, it also would pair well with salted almonds for a snack, or moderately spiced Asian cuisines. 8.0% ABV
The Zilliken Family has been producing wine on the Saar in the Mosel for more than 270 years. Laying the groundwork for what would become one of the grandest family-owned estates anywhere on the Saar and Mosel was Ferdinand Geltz. Ferdinand was also a co-founder of the “Vereins der Naturweinversteigerer Großer Ring,” an organization today known as the VDP Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. It promoted the sale of premier quality unchaptalized wines as a way to raise the profile of the outstanding Rieslings being produced in this winegrowing region. Today, Winemaker Fitz Zilliken, now the 11th generation owner and winemaker continues to grow exclusively Riesling on some of the steepest slopes along the Mosel River and fermenting in traditional Fuder Barrels. This wine was produced from fruit picked at 87°Oechsle and was fermented to fully fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (61 g/l), and low alcohol.
