In April, we are exploring the red wines of Burgundy and particularly the Cote de Beaune area, along with an old-vine Beaujolais for comparison. The virtual talk/tasting will be on Wednesday 23rd April with our Director Vicki and Stephen Maurice, owner of Domaine du Prieure.
For those keen for an introduction to wine tasting, we’ll be starting at 7.45pm with an optional ‘how to taste’ session, before an overview to Burgundy at 8pm, and then chatting with Stephen at 8.15pm to learn about the Cote de Beaune area, and why this is such a great destination for fine reds, as well as taste Stephen’s red Burgundy together. The session is via zoom and instructions will be sent via email prior to the event. It will be recorded and will be available to watch on replay for those who purchase.
Wines: For April, we have an exploration of the Cote de Beaune region within Burgundy, with three delicious Pinot Noirs: Vincent Morey’s excellent Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, Marc Haisma’s Pommard Premier Cru Les Arvelets, and finally, from nearby slopes, Domaine du Prieure’s Bourgogne Hautes Cote de Beaune. At up to 500 metres’ altitude, this area is increasingly prized to bring freshness to the wines, as the climate changes and vignerons adapt to new conditions.
Lastly, heading down the A6, there’s the perfumed, cherry fruit of Jean-Michel Dupre’s Beaujolais Villages ‘Vignes de 1940’. This is (perhaps unsurprisingly) named as the grapevines were planted all the way back in 1940. This longevity brings a lovely juicy flavour to the wine. This Gamay is a great compare-and-contrast with the Cote de Beaune Pinot Noirs.
All four wines are light to medium in body, and are extremely versatile, should you be planning some good meals over Easter!
