Travel through a fine wine region or style each month with these half bottles, by producers who have forged the vinous way to our hearts. Delicious wines, often made in relatively limited quantities, that really show what the particular region or style is about. The wines can be white, red or a mix depending on the region. Electronic tasting notes and guided, online tastings (a mix of live and recorded tastings) are included, all hosted by our Director and Master of Wine, Vicki.
FEBRUARY SELECTION: NORTHEAST ITALY
For some excellent fizz, we have the long-aged Bellavista Franciacorta. This is new to TLFWC, and for those who have tried Ca del Bosco’s Franciacorta in the past, it is a great comparison. It’s made by the traditional method from Champagne grapes and aged for four years, giving a deliciously fruity palate with vanilla and brioche hints.
Next, we have Livio Felluga’s Pinot Grigio from Colli Orientali, the hillside area of Friuli. This show what great Pinot Grigio can taste like, supremely fresh and flavoursome, a far cry from the high acid, neutral examples found lower down in the region. For a contrast, Ca dei Frati’s beautiful white from Lugana, this is from the Turbiana grape and was barrel aged for six months prior to release. It’s arguably the best white from Lugana, with juicy peach, honey, apple and vanilla notes that last long on the finish. And finally, a fresh, cherry-scented Valpolicella from Ca Rugate; if you haven’t had this before, it’s a light, fruity red that is perfect for a charcuterie board, a great contrast to heavy winter fare.
