Travel through a fine wine region or style each month with these half bottles, by producers who have forged the vinous way to our hearts. Delicious wines, often made in relatively limited quantities, that really show what the particular region or style is about. The wines can be white, red or a mix depending on the region. Electronic tasting notes and guided, online tastings (a mix of live and recorded tastings) are included, all hosted by our Director and Master of Wine, Vicki.
JUNE SELECTION: Fine Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc blends
This month we are exploring Sauvignon Blanc, with four great wines in different styles. This virtual tasting will be on Wednesday 19th June at 8pm with our Director Vicki as well as one Kevin Judd, of Greywacke in Marlborough, New Zealand.
The wines: we start with David Sautereau’s elegant, crisp Sancerre. Any exploration of top-notch Sauvignon Blanc wouldn’t be the same without this classic. Next, to Bordeaux for our newest purchase, the G de Guiraud dry white Bordeaux, from the Sauternes area. It’s an irresistible blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. It’s also a great demonstration of how these two grapes thrive in the southwest of France. Peachy, juicy, with lovely depth of flavour, yet it finishes dry. A brilliant wine for Summer and a great food-pairing wine too.
Then to Northeast Italy for Cuvee Terlaner, a blend of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the Dolomite Mountains and the Alto Adige wine region. Sauvignon is a small part of the blend, but this grape provides beautiful aroma and flavour that is hard to find in other grapes. Finally, we go to New Zealand for Greywacke’s ‘Wild’ Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a barrel-fermented, complex, fascinating wine that tastes very differently to mass-market Sauvignons. Made by Kevin Judd, previously of Cloudy Bay, this is one of the best white wines in New Zealand, and is deservedly famous.
This month’s virtual tasting will be on Wednesday 19th June at 8pm with our Director Vicki as well as one of the producers from the case. The tasting is via zoom and instructions will be sent via email prior to the event. The 75-minute tasting will be recorded and will be available to watch on replay for those who purchase.
