Description

Classic Gevrey-Chambertin from the south of this prized, Cote de Nuits appellation of Burgundy, and the Georges Lignier estate. Vines lie on warm, gravel soils that give delightfully juicy, intense red fruit flavours. Structurally, its an elegant, midweight style of Burgundy, not opulent or rich, but full of flavour. It’s a great food match and drinking very well but will keep too, if required.

TASTING NOTE: Deep ruby in colour, this has lovely red and black fruit aromas. There’s a hint of spice and herb but overall it’s classic and fruit-driven in style, with medium body, fine tannins and fresh acidity. There is plenty of flavour but it’s not heavy, and is an elegant wine, great for adding some flair to a Sunday lunch, or sipping over an evening. Refreshing 13% alcohol.

FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: It’s medium in body with lovely red and black fruits, and would make a great match for chicken and meatier fish dishes, or Jambon Persille (ham terrine with parsley) for a local match. Also try creamy and mature cheeses. Drink now or for another 4 years or so.

ABOUT: This is a family estate that was founded four generations ago by Georges Lignier. The current winemaker and manager is family member Benoit Stehly, who took over the running of the estate in 2003. There are 16 hectares of vines which cover a staggering 50 different parcels of prime Cote de Nuits land, four of which are in the famous Grand Crus of the area. While not certified Organic, the philosophy of the domaine is to intervene little in the vineyard and cellar, using minimal treatments and using techniques such as de-budding, green harvesting and leaf-plucking to keep yields low and allow good sun exposure to ripen the fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are majority destemmed and undergo a cold soak to draw out precious fruit and aroma, before fermentation and ageing in oak barrels anywhere up to 20 months. It’s an interesting domaine that isn’t over-priced and has an excellent range of top Cotes de Nuits wines, we’re delighted to have some half bottles for The Little Fine Wine Company!
