From star winemaker Alvaro Palacios, this is a full-bodied red made from 100% Garnacha grapes, and an excellent example of bold red wines from Priorat in Catalunya, Spain. On both the nose and palate there’s an abundance of dense, ripe black fruits. It’s full of black cherry, blackcurrant, blackberries and blueberries, with some spicy notes making an appearance too. The tannins are well-structured making it an elegant red to savour and enjoy.
Alvaro Palacios set this vineyard up in 1989, on a quest to grow grapes on low-yielding old vines and combine them with the use of modern winemaking techniques. Priorat, some 100 miles west of Barcelona, is known for producing high quality wines, and Alvaro’s vines grow on steep slopes of slate (known as llicorella). The Garnacha grapes thrive in the dry, hot climate, ripening with the help of the reflection of the Mediterranean sea, bringing out the ripe fruit flavours. This wine goes really well with food, especially grilled lamb and game. It’s full of flavour if opened now, but can age in the bottle for up to five years. A bold, powerful example of the quality of the wine being produced in Priorat, we highly recommend this! 14.5% abv.
