This wine from Martin Codax is produced in the Rias Baixas region of Northwestern Spain with the signature grape of the region, Albarino. It is a wine that reflects its origins, with a refreshing, cool, enlivening quality that conjures images of a wild coastline, sun-filled vineyards and fresh food being served as an accompaniment. Light bodied with gentle minerality and notes of peach and citrus, particularly grapefruit, it’s no wonder this is one of the most requested and enjoyed white wines in the world currently.
It was in 1986 when a collection of over 50 producers from the Rias Baixas area formed the cooperative known as Martin Codax. It was named Martin Codax after a Galician troubadour who was renowned for singing of love and the sea. Most of the vineyards here are situated by the coastline which is said to contribute to a sensation of salinity and freshness in the wine. The cliffs below the vineyards majestically rise up to altitudes of over 300 metres and this cooling influence helps keep the natural acidity and fresh character of the grapes while not allowing them to over ripen. This wine works alone as a superb aperitif but also pairs well, unsurprisingly, with fresh fish including squid and clams!
