Description
This wine gives the best white Burgundy wines a run for their money. Cervaro is a blend predominantly made with Chardonnay alongside a small proportion of the traditional, local Grechetto grape, produced by the famed Antinori family from their Castello della Sala estate in the Umbria Region of Italy.
TASTING NOTE: 2023 was a superb vintage for Cervaro, with warm Summer conditions to ripen the grapes and cooler nighttime temperatures to provide lovely freshness in the wine. A blend of Chardonnay alongside a small proportion of the traditional Grechetto grape, the 2023 has an attractive, light-yellow colour in the glass, with aromatic, floral notes of honeysuckle and acacia, as well as citrus and spice. As the aromas unfurl, honey, brioche, orange blossom and mineral notes reveal themselves… it’s tempting to drink it up promptly, given it’s so delicious, but savouring it over an evening will bring even more pleasure. It’s fairly full-bodied but the lick of natural acidity and freshness mean excellent balance and a fine, elegant feel. With the ability to drink well now or cellar till 2031, in our opinion, Cervaro remains the best white wine in Italy, there simply isn’t another that approaches it.
ABOUT:According to the Antinori family, the name Cervaro comes from the noble family that owned the estate and vineyards of Castello della Sala (where this wine is made) during the 14th century, Monaldeschi della Cervara. With its debut vintage in 1985, Cervaro was conceived to be an age-worthy white wine which would reflect its origins in the Umbrian countryside close to the Tuscan border. One of the first Italian white wines to utilise the benefits of malolactic fermentation in barrel, a process which contributes rich and creamy character by converting tart tasting malic acid into the softer lactic acid, this is a truly unique white, and deserving of its position at the top of the Italian quality tree.
