Description

A relatively youthful wine made of 75% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Canaiolo, produced by the Capezzana estate in the Carmignano area of Tuscany, Italy. This is an excellent alternative to great Chianti Classico, at a reasonable price with plenty of character, flavour, and versatility.

TASTING NOTE: An attractive purple colour. On the nose: It has notes of blackberries, blackcurrants, and mixed herbs such as thyme and mint, plus good-quality oak barrel ageing, add further black fruits and spice. On the palate: It’s well-structured, with firm tannins. It’s fresh and medium-bodied with a lovely long, complex finish, which is very dry and intense. 13.5% alcohol by volume.

FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: This is an appealing, rich, firm-structured red wine that is particularly good for a meal with white or red meats, or dishes such as carpaccio. We would suggest trying this with a hearty spiced lentil stew or with braised beef cheek, and some creamy polenta. Some might find this austere without food, so decant it if you aren’t food-matching. Drink now or keep it until 2026.

ABOUT: The Capezzana estate in the Carmignano area of Tuscany has been run by the same family since all the way back to 804, and today Benedetta and Vittorio Contini Bonacossi make and sell the wines, with their winemaker Franco Bernabei. They also make a fine extra virgin olive oil, run a cooking school and make another 7 wines, as well as a delicious Vin Santo, the local sweet wine that is made from dried grapes. It’s a great place to take a tour if ever on holiday in this area!
