As an alternative to Chianti, this is an excellent wine with character, flavour and versatility. It has plenty of dark berry fruit and firm structure, hallmarks of Tuscany, with an extra element from French varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc alongside the more traditional Tuscan red grape varieties. It also punches above its price tag, we can’t recommend it enough! Barco Reale is dark-coloured with perfumed blackcurrant and spice aromas from Sangioviese (75%), Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo and Cabernet Franc, and good-quality oak barrel ageing.
Barco Reale is the name for relatively youthful red wines from the Carmignano region, in Tuscany, just north of Florence. This Barco Reale was produced by Capezzana. The estate has been run by the same family since all the way back in 804, and today Benedetta and Beatrice Contini Bonacossi make and sell the wines, with their winemaker Franco Bernabei. They also make a fine extra virgin olive oil, run a cooking school and make another 7 wines, as well as a delicious Vin Santo, the local sweet wine that is made from dried grapes. It’s a great place to take a tour if ever on holiday in this area.Medium-bodied with firm tannins and fresh acidity that suit heartier meat and lentil dishes well, as well as ragu. It’s not dissimilar to good Chianti but has more black fruit character. 13.5% ABV.
