This elegant Bordeaux is juicy with lovely notes of ripe plum and herb along with layers of liquorice and vanilla. The tannins are noticeable but well-balanced giving gentle structure to the wine, otherwise it’s silky textured on the palate. The blend is 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and benefits from ageing in oak barrels for 18 – 22 months. This adds to the vanilla and toasty complexity of the wine.

Château Montaiguillon is a small family-owned estate on the outskirts of the medieval village of Saint-Emillion. It has a beautiful and well-placed spot on the top of a hill overlooking the famed estates of Chateau Cheval Blanc and Chateau Petrus. The soil here is composed of mostly clay and limestone which is perfect for the growing of Merlot – the predominant grape used in this area of Bordeaux. The property is owned by the Amart family and is currently under the reigns of third generation Chantal Amart with consultation from the internationally renowned Michael Rolland. The property was bought in 1949 by Chantal’s great grandfather. This is a perennially popular Bordeaux which is excellent value, just a hop away from considerably more glamorous vineyards of Saint Emilion. This pairs itself wonderfully with game casserole or any lamb or beef dish. It is drinking very well now but will improve for a few more years in bottle if you can resist! 14.5% ABV.
