Description
This is a red wine from the Northern Rhone appellation of St Joseph made entirely from Syrah.
TASTING NOTES: A heady mix of black cherry, blackberries and grilled meat with firm and focussed tannins, this is undoubtedly at its best when enjoyed with food. A quarter of the grapes are crushed as whole bunches which helps give the wine a superb herbal, spicy and scented character – think olives and liquorice.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: This wine can be enjoyed in its youth and will match well with a number of game dishes and white meats. 14.5% ABV.
ABOUT: The Gripa family have winemaking in their blood, having grown vines in the village of Mauves, at the heart of St Joseph, since the 17 Century. In 1974, Bernard Gripa decided to start producing under his own name and more recently his son, Fabrice, has taken over the running of their acclaimed estate. St Joseph generally produces slightly lighter reds than nearby Crozes Hermitage due to the vineyards being easterly facing, meaning a daily average of 2 hours less sunshine (a key factor in determining the ripeness of the grapes) than those on the opposite bank of the Rhone river.
