What is Rhone Valley Wine?
As we have touched on, the region is divided into two main areas: the Northern Rhône, where Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the Southern Rhône, famous for its blends centred around Grenache.
Northern Rhône wines are often powerful and structured, with Syrah delivering rich, spicy flavours and a distinctive aroma. Whites from this area, made from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne, are aromatic and complex, offering floral and stone fruit notes.
In the Southern Rhône, blends combine Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and other varieties to create wines with layered fruit, spice, and earthiness. This area produces a broad spectrum of wines, including red wines, refreshing rosés, and balanced whites. The world-renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a flagship appellation of this subregion, celebrated for its depth and elegance.
Rhone Valley Wine Types
Among the most celebrated wines in the Rhone Valley is its red wine, which dominates the landscape. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah produces deeply concentrated and spicy reds with dark fruit flavours and strong structure. The Southern Rhône blends, led by Grenache and often combined with Syrah and Mourvèdre, are known for their rich, layered profiles and approachable character.
Alongside reds, the Rhône Valley also produces expressive white wine styles. Northern Rhône whites, made from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne, are aromatic and textured, often offering floral and stone fruit notes with a creamy finish. Southern Rhône whites tend to be lighter and fresher, showcasing bright acidity and citrus flavours.
The region’s vibrant rosé wine is another highlight, especially from appellations like Tavel and Côtes du Rhône. These rosés range from dry and refreshing to more full-bodied, with fresh red fruit and herbal nuances, making them ideal for a wide range of occasions.
