Description
Classic white Burgundy that is a smart buy compared to more illustrious names such as Pouilly-Fuisse, Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet. It has lovely lemon and stone fruits, fine texture and a complex, mouthwatering palate, ie all the hallmarks of great wines from this region. Made by the Briday family, who have championed the wines of Rully since 1976.
TASTING NOTE: an attractive, bight yellow colour. On the nose: there are fresh, aromatic notes of pear, lemon, spice and stone fruits such as peach and apricot. On the palate: it is fruity, medium in body, and very juicy with delicious peach character. There is also a slightly savoury note (vanilla, butter) from ageing on the fermentation lees, that adds to the complexity of the wine. It’s dry, fresh, fine-textured and long on the finish, a great example of classic white Burgundy. 13% alcohol.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: As with most good Burgundies, this is a versatile white that is particularly good with poultry, and roast turkey/chicken in particular. You could also match it with creamier dishes such as a creamy mushroom tagliatelle or creamy chicken orzo. Drink now till 2028.
ABOUT: This family estate is based in Rully, in the Cote Chalonnaise area of Burgundy, and is an absolute gem. Stephane and Sandrine Briday manage the business, following on from Stephane’s father, Michel, who founded it with his wife Lucette in 1976. They now have 15 hectares (about 37 acres), farmed in a low-intervention way, using as few treatments on the vines as possible and replacing traditional weed killers, for example, with a return to soil cultivation. Only natural yeasts are used for fermentation (rather than scientifically selected yeasts), and use of oak is judicious. Since 2014, it has been certified by Terra Vitis, an independent body dedicated to certifying growers who farm in a sustainable way.
