Description
TASTING NOTE: The Sherazade has an attractive dark red colour. On the nose: it is lovely and fruity with notes of plum, cherry and blackberry. There are balsamic hints and spice too, with black pepper and black olive to complete the aromas. On the palate: it is fairly full in body and generous of flavour, with more of the fruity characters that follow from the nose, a fresh acidity and almost mineral flavour. It’s well-structured with firm tannins, balanced by the juicy fruit. It’s 13.5% alcohol, and while perhaps not the most elegant wine, has a generous, warming, hearty style. It’s a real character!
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: As a Sicilian wine it is easily matched with traditional Italian food. Donnafugata suggest a Sicilian fish and tomato soup (such as here: jamieoliver.com/recipes/fish/sicilian-fish-soup), pizza or a classic tomato spaghetti, or puttanesca. It would also be brilliant with roast/grilled lamb or beef, as it is well-structured to match a protein dish. There’s no need to decant, just open it at time of serving. Drink between 16 and 18 degrees C. Enjoy now or for a further 3-4 years
ABOUT: Donnafugata is a family producer with Jose Rallo and brother Antonio Rallo at the helm. It was founded by their father Giacomo in 1983, with his wife, Gabriella, a pioneer in Sicilian and female-led viticulture. They own five vineyards across Sicily, from Etna to Marsala to Pantelleria Island, giving a diverse, delicious) range of wines. The name Donnafugata means ‘woman on the run‘, referring to Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples (and sister of french Queen Marie-Antoinette) who fled to Sicily during the Neapolitan Revolution in 1799, hiding out in what are now Donnafugata’s vineyards!
