Description
Travel through a fine wine region or style each month with these half bottles, by producers who have forged the vinous way to our hearts. Delicious wines, often made in relatively limited quantities, that really show what the particular region or style is about. The wines can be white, red or a mix depending on the region. Electronic tasting notes and guided, online tastings (a mix of live and recorded tastings) are included, all hosted by our Director and Master of Wine, Vicki.
DECEMBER SELECTION: Spectacular sparkling wines
We have two traditional-method wines in the case: a Cremant d’Alsace by Leon Beyer (those with the club for three years may remember how good this wine is, and it’s great to have on hand in the fridge). And, for something new, the ‘mini cuvee’ (pictured above) by Rathfinny. They are an impressive English estate on the Sussex coast. But this wine is, in fact, not so mini! It’s a 50cl size, midway between a standard 75cl and our popular half bottles. I look forward to hearing your thoughts about the 50cl size!
For a contrast to the two traditional-method Sparklings, we have Ruggieri’s lovely Prosecco. From the hillsides of Conegliano Valdobiaddene, the best place to make Prosecco, it qualifies as a Prosecco Superiore DOCG, ie it’s a good one! It is fresh, floral and elegant, and at 11% would make a great treat on Christmas morning, if (like me) you like to start the day in style.
Staying in Italy for something entirely different and made in tiny quantities, it’s Contero’s Brachetto d’Acqui. While the Piemontese generally drink this as an aperitif or with charcuterie, this sweet, slightly sparkling red is fantastic with fresh fruit, berry tarts or chocolate desserts. We also think it might be a great way to accompany a stack of pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, should you be thinking of a leisurely brunch over Christmas. At 5.5% alcohol, this is not quite as naughty as it sounds!
