Description
Fontodi is arguably the best example of Chianti Classico, made by Giovanni Manetti and the team in Tuscany, Italy. From 100% Sangiovese, It’s great to drink in youth but can be aged too, as it’s a structured style that is full of flavour. A complex, serious Chianti.
TASTING NOTE: Purple red colour. On the nose: Lovely blackberry, cherry, and herb perfume from the Sangiovese grape. On the palate: Medium to full in body with medium to high acidity. Well-structured with plenty of fruit flavours such as tart red cherry, and plum with warm cinnamon and clove note on the back followed by a silky richness and firm supporting tannins.14 % alcohol by volume.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: This wine has enough weight to match with many rich red meats and without overpowering them. A classic dish with a wine such as this is Bistecca alla Fiorentina. This wine also pairs well with a local classic of rabbit Ragu with a tomato base and fresh pasta. If possible, decant for 30 minutes before serving. Can be cellared until the end of 2026 at least.
ABOUT: The Manetti family originally made their name creating terracotta pots before branching out into wines; they bought the Fontodi estate in 1968. Their Chianti Classico is, indeed, a classic from the village of Panzano, within the Chianti subregion of Tuscany. It easily rivals a good Bordeaux as a food match for meat and heartier protein dishes. Giovanni Manetti grows the grapes organically before fermenting them and ageing them in his cellar in oak barrels. Look out for his highly-rated Syrah, Flaccianello and Vigna del Sorbo wines too.
