Fontodi Chianti Classico DOCG 2020 HALF Bottle (37.5cl)

Red, Tuscany, Italy

The Manetti family originally made their name with terracotta pots before branching out into wines. Their Chianti Classico is, indeed, a classic from the village of Panzano, within the Chianti subregion, Tuscany. It easily rivals a good Bordeaux as a food match for meat and heartier protein dishes. This 2020 Chianti Classico is purply red in colour with lovely blackberry cherry and herb perfume on the nose from the Sangiovese grape.

Chianti has a mixed reputation; it’s easy to think of the simple, light Chiantis on the lower supermarket shelves or the top of a restaurant list. But, there are different styles and qualities from this huge region. For the original, hillside vineyards, before more vines were planted, look for the Classico wines, as here. It proves how great the wines can be, with the potential to last for years. While many other grapes can be used as part of the blend, the well-known Tuscan grape variety Sangiovese is alone used for this wine; Giovanni Manetti grows the grapes organically before fermenting them and ageing them in his cellar in oak barrels. It’s medium to full in body, well-structured and has lots of fruit flavour and richness plus a bit of tannin to give gravity to the wine. 14% ABV.

An impressive Chianti with plenty of flavour and firm structure, this is a great match for red meats, and try it with goose too! It’s weighty enough to match meats and casseroles, without overpowering them. Try meatballs or lasagne for a classic Italian match, or wild boar ragu. For the end of a meal, it goes well with hard Italian cheeses such as Pecorino and Parmesan.
