Description
A stunning red Burgundy Premier Cru from Morey Saint Denis, by experts in this appellation, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils. It has the beautiful, polished fruit and silky texture of good Burgundy, with appealing aromas of forest fruits, cherry and spice, and significant potential for longevity. A brooding, complex wine that manages to be elegant at the same time, and shows off how good Morey can be.
TASTING NOTE: This impressive Premier Cru has a dark red colour in the glass, with aromas of cherry, blackberry, wild strawberries and spice. It’s elegant and medium in body rather than full (and moderate in alcohol) but has the concentration of good Burgundy from the Cote de Nuits, and particularly a spiciness, earth and dark fruit complexity of the Morey Saint Denis appellation. There are plenty of tannins to support long ageing as expected of a Premier Cru, but they are fine-grained and elegant in nature. A lovely wine that is delicious to drink from the off with decanting, but will reveal fascinating layers of flavour over time too. 13% alcohol.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: A powerful red Burgundy with good structure, this has plenty of weight to match roasts and grilled meats, even red meats such as lamb and duck, or roasted aubergine if you are looking for a vegetarian option. With time it will develop more earthy and meaty notes, which will be great with game, mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses. It is drinking well now with decanting, or keep for another 5-6 years if you prefer a gamier, savoury, more mellow style.
ABOUT: This is a family estate that was founded four generations ago by Georges Lignier. The current winemaker and manager is family member Benoit Stehly, who took over the running of the estate in 2003. There are 16 hectares of vines which cover a staggering 50 different parcels of prime Cote de Nuits land, four of which are in the famous Grand Crus of the area. While not certified Organic, the philosophy of the domaine is to intervene little in the vineyard and cellar, using minimal treatments and using techniques such as de-budding, green harvesting and leaf-plucking to keep yields low and allow good sun exposure to ripen the fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are majority destemmed and undergo a cold soak to draw out precious fruit and aroma, before fermentation and ageing in oak barrels anywhere up to 20 months. It’s an interesting domaine that isn’t over-priced and has an excellent range of top Cotes de Nuits wines, we’re delighted to have some half bottles for The Little Fine Wine Company!
