For more than four decades Jerry Lohr has been synonymous with pioneering innovation on the Central Coast of California.
TASTING NOTE: This rich, Merlot-dominant wine has a deep red colour. The nose is filled with aromas of plum and black cherry, with gentle floral notes of violet. It’s a full, intense wine with generous but not high alcohol, and smooth fine tannins. Aromas from 12 months’ ageing in oak barrel are spices such as clove, cinnamon and vanilla and also toasted walnuts. In addition to the Merlot there is also a small amount of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon giving more berry fruit and notes of pomegranate, and savoury herb on the long finish. 14% alcohol.
FOOD PAIRING, SERVICE AND, STORAGE: This versatile wine with plenty of fruit and hints of oak makes a great match for grilled sausages and therefore would suit a summer barbecue well. For a veggie match, try with vegetable shish kebabs or creamy spinach and tomato tortellini as suggested by J. Lohr themselves. There is a specific food match, which is a great recipe for puff pastry tarts with fig and ricotta by the J. Lohr estate here: jlohr.com/recipes/puff-pastry-tarts-with-ricotta-and-figs This wine is fruity and easy to drink from the off but you could also decant it for an hour before serving to ensure it’s even more mellow and juicy! It’s great now but would easily keep for another three or four years.
ABOUT: Founded in 1972 by Jerry Lohr, a pioneer of the Central Coast region of California who planted 280 acres of his first vines in Monterey’s Arroyo Seco district of California. He valued Monterey’s cool temperatures from coastal winds as well as rocky soils to create complex white wines, such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. In the 1980’s he saw the great potential of the Paso Robles region for the Bordeaux grape varieties and began planting there too, expanding the estate hugely to 1600 hectares (4000 acres)
