Description
This classic wine from Franco Massolino in Barolo, Piedmont, shows exactly why Barolo has such a good reputation as being home to one of Italy’s best wines (Barolo is often known as the ‘King of Wines’). Made from the Nebbiolo grape and grown in vineyards in the Serralunga d’Alba districts of Barolo (where Massolino are based).
TASTING NOTE: Brilliant ruby colour. On the nose: Beautifully pure, fresh red fruit and floral aromas and hints of tea leaf as well as mixed spices. On the palate: Full-bodied, with rich, powerful fruit core, silky but firm tannins and lashings of berry flavours as well as red and black fruits, hints of mixed herb, with cherry fruit on the long finish.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: The name Barolo refers to both the wine and the town of Barolo itself. It is a food and wine destination, with its autumn truffle season, and excellent cheese and wines, that pair perfectly with this wine. It’s still a young wine so decant for a few hours before serving & match it with steaks or heartier lentil dishes. It will easily last for another 7-8 years.
ABOUT: Barolo is in Piemonte (or Piedmont, literally meaning foot of the mountain (a nod to the nearby Alps), which is a wine region in Italy’s Northwest, tucked under Milan and just above Genoa. Franco Massolino and his family have 23 hectares based mainly in Serralunga d’Alba, which makes particularly long-lived Barolo. Franco Massolino is one of the stars of Barolo, in Northwest Italy.
