Description
This Chianti Classico is a juicy, fresh and flavourful red from a producer whose vineyards date back to 1141!
TASTING NOTE: Medium intensity but bright ruby red colour in the glass. On the nose: classic cherry, herb and tea leaf aromas of Chianti and the Sangiovese grape. It also has a hint of spice from ageing partly in barrels. On the palate: it is medium in body and very very juicy, partly due to the naturally fresh acidity of the grape and partly to the youthful, nature of the cherry flavours. It has good structure but the tannins are not austere. It’s long, juicy and fine in texture on the finish. Not as weighty as the very top Chianti Classicos but a lovely wine.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: A relatively versatile, easy-to-drink Chianti that is neither too light nor too heavy. While it’s a step up from the Chiantis that you find in many a pizzeria on the first rung of the wine list, it is still an excellent match for pizza or a ragu and pasta. But you can also pair it with something slightly more meaty such as a duck or game dish, or Mushroom Wellington. It will also match a charcuterie or cheese board well. For a veggie dish, try with grilled aubergines and or roast cauliflower. Drink now till end of 2026; serve at 17-18 degree or even a touch cooler in Summer. No need to decant.
ABOUT: Ricasoli have had vineyards since at least 1141; amazingly the company is still family-owned, with Baron Francesco Ricasoli in charge! The family have 240 hectares of vineyards (600 acres), all around Brolio Castle (hence the brand name of this wine) which is located by the town of Gaiole in Chianti. The family are intrinsically linked with the wines of Chianti; it was actually Baron Bettino Ricasoli, an industrious member of the family (who was also Prime Minster of Italy twice), who drew up the original classification of Chianti in 1872!
