Description
Sunshine in a glass is how we’d describe this lovely Chablis from the 2023 vintage! 2023 was a sunny, warm year with lots of ripeness in the grapes, and the wines are deliciously fruity as a result. This is brimming with apple, peach, tangerine and honeysuckle notes, and on the palate, is smooth and extremely juicy. It was farmed Organically by a small producer, Vincent Wengier, on typical limestone soils of the Chablis region. It tastes very good indeed, and, as you’ll see from the photo, it is smartly packaged too, with a traditional wax seal, instead of an aluminium capsule to add a dash of flair (the wax seal doesn’t need opening, simply push the corkscrew down through the wax to reach the cork as usual). This is an absolute treat from Chablis that is normally reserved for restaurant lists, so we are delighted to receive an allocation for The Little Fine Wine Company!
TASTING NOTE: An attractive yellow-gold in colour. On the nose: this is open and expressive with charming aromas of peach, nectarine, ripe apple, tangerine and honeysuckle, and a hint of freshly-baked pastry. On the palate: this is relatively full for a Chablis, with impressive depth of stone fruit and citrus flavour, to rival a Premier Cru wine. But, despite the full body and flavour concentration, and rounded, smooth finish, it retains the mouthwatering, dry, refreshing quality of good Chablis, all at a moderate 13% alcohol. It’s very hard not to love!
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVING: Vincent recommends drinking this with white meats, or fish with butter-based sauces. Particular matches include Chicken Supreme, with a mushroom, herb and garlicky cream sauce, as well as scallops or sole with lemon butter. For a vegetarian match, try goat’s cheese salad or goat’s cheese tart. And for a vegan one, mushroom risotto, mushroom soup or even a potato and leek soup work wonderfully. Drink now or keep till end of 2027.
ABOUT: Vincent and Sophie Wengier are fourth-generation winemakers based in the village of Prehy, in the southwest of the Chablis appellation. They are a family producer with 26 hectares of vines (about 60 acres) which they now farm organically, gaining official Organic certification from the 2023 vintage. The vineyards are 40 years old and lie on clay and limestone soils, typical of the region. Their wines are full of flavour, helped by long ageing of around 10 months on the natural fermentation lees, which brings a subtle richness to the wine, alongside Chablis’ trademark refreshment.
