Description

For something different, try this 50cl bottle of Rathfinny’s English Sparkling Rose Wine from Sussex (50cl is the size between half bottle and full, pouring 4 x 125ml glasses). Just inland from the famous Seven Sisters cliffs, Rathfinny is located in the South Downs National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty in Southern England. The wine has a lovely pink colour and is deliciously fresh, dry and elegant (& is beautifully packaged too!). It’s a mouthwatering blend of Pinot Noir (40%), Chardonnay (30%), Pinot Meunier (20%), Pinot Precoce (10%) grapes.

TASTING NOTE: Pale pink colour with constant bubbles in the glass. On the nose: Attractive aromas of strawberry, ripe peaches, citrus and hints of brioche. Moving onto the palate, there is mandarin and more red fruit flavours with raspberries and cranberries. The wine is medium-bodied with crisp, natural acidity. The Champagne-method winemaking, and 18 months’ ageing in cellar, bring a quiet richness and toasty complexity. A lifted citrus finish, it’s fruity and dry! 12% alcohol.

PAIRING & SERVING IDEAS: Like many high quality English sparklings, the wine makes a wonderful aperitif, but for a food wine it is surprisingly versatile, matching lobster bisque if you’re planning to splash out, charcuterie, or for something a little later in the meal, hard cheeses. If we are staying true to the saying ‘grow together goes together’, and being close proximity to the English Channel, it goes very well with seafood and battered foods such as fish and chips, the fresh acidity providing a great foil to the fat in the dish. And the lovely red fruit character is great with pavlova or a bowl of berries. Serve chilled, as you would with other sparkling, at around 7-10 degrees C. Enjoy now or until 2028.

ABOUT: Rathfinny Estate in East Sussex (near Alfriston) was founded in 2010 by husband and wife, Mark and Sarah Driver. Once a working arable farm, the first vines were planted in 2012 and today Rathfinny comprises over 200 acres of predominantly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. As well as being a stunning site, the Rathfinny vineyard is very good for growing sparkling wine grapes: the light, thin, clay loam soils over chalk are free draining and very similar to the Champagne region of France
