Description
Travel through a fine wine region or style each month with these half bottles, by producers who have forged the vinous way to our hearts. Delicious wines, often made in relatively limited quantities, that really show what the particular region or style is about. The wines can be white, red or a mix depending on the region. Electronic tasting notes and guided, online tastings (a mix of live and recorded tastings) are included, all hosted by our Director and Master of Wine, Vicki. This month’s online tasting is this Wednesday 17th September at 7.45pm.Â
SEPTEMBER SELECTION: Sweet wines (other than Sauternes)
Try Maculan’s Dindarello, made the old-fashioned way by drying Muscat grapes on old wooden racks to give a honeyed, orange-blossom note and nectar-like sweetness. This Italian wine is fresh, not cloying, and makes a lighter substitute for dessert, or a match with fruit tarts. From France, Domaine Baumard’s brisk, appley Coteaux du Layon, from the banks of the Loire and the Chenin Blanc grape. And Charles Hours’ Clos Uroulat, a peachy sweet wine from the rare Petit Manseng variety, grown in Jurancon, Southwest France. Far from being heavy or unctuous, this is juicy and succulent, pairing a variety of foods from cheeses to pancakes, pies and desserts.
Lastly, we have Lustau’s rich and frankly rather decadent Pedro Ximenez. This is fully sweet, aged for 12 years in the cellar, with fig, date and raisin notes. It is fortified, and, if you can wait, it is a brilliant wine during the festive season! Drink it as a digestif, match with blue cheeses or, for the easiest and most delicious of desserts, simply pour over vanilla ice cream.
The online tasting is via zoom at 7.45pm this Wednesday 17th September, with revered Spanish producer Lustau in attendance. We’ll be discussing how sweet wines are made, where, and why they taste so good! Further details will be provided on purchase of the case.
