Description
This blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Merlot from famed producer Gaja in Piemonte, Italy is stellar, with serious depth of flavour and structure which puts it way ahead of the average wines from this area. It’s great to drink now but will easily age for 3-5 years if you’d like to cellar it.
TASTING NOTE: An attractive deep red/purple colour. This wine combines the structure and longevity of Nebbiolo with the cherry fruit of Barbera and the juicy mid-palate of Merlot. On the nose: It’s extremely perfumed, with floral and violet notes, and a layered, dark-berry fruit. On the palate: Fine tannins and a lingering finish with hints of vanilla and spice come to the fore along with mixed herbs. 13.5% alcohol by volume.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: With the versatility of this wine, it will pair alongside many great dishes as suggested by Gaja, like a classic grilled sirloin steak, or with pizza topped with Italian sausage, mushrooms, peppers, and rocket. This will also make a great pairing with crispy aubergine parmesan with fresh pasta and rich tomato sauce. This is a wine that is ready to drink now, or easily keep until 2025+.
ABOUT: Moresco is the name of the original family who farmed one of Gaja’s unique vineyards in Barbaresco, in the Langhe part of Piedmont. Today, the Sito Moresco wine is a blend of grapes from Moresco and Treiso (also in Barbaresco) and parts of Serralunga d’Alba in Barolo. Founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 the estate is now run by the 4th and 5th generation, Angelo Gaja and children Gaia and Giovanni. Based in Barbaresco but with land in prime Tuscan vineyard areas, Angelo Gaja was an early promoter of single-vineyard wines, now known as ‘Crus’, following the Burgundy mould, making small quantities of exceptional quality wines with utmost care. Many would consider them, in the words of the Wine Spectator, ‘perhaps the finest Italian wines ever made’.
