Description
Guigal’s is one of the very best producers and is synonymous with two things: Syrah and the Northern Rhone, both found in the appellation of Cote Rotie. This is a red wine made predominantly from Syrah with a small amount of the white grape Viognier added to provide aromatic depth, as is standard for wines produced here.
TASTING NOTE: A brilliant deep ruby colour in the glass. On the nose: The signature peppery notes of a Rhone Syrah and subtle vanilla spice, with plenty of ripe red and black fruits. On the palate: it has lovely dark fruits including blackberries and cherries, with some savoury, meaty notes as well as the aromatic lift of the Viognier, and a slight spice from 36 months spent maturing in barrel. With an excellent balance of tannin and acidity, this also has significant ageing potential which will add further gamey characters and delicious complexity.
FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: This wine is rich and powerful, it’s wonderful to enjoy without food but has some excellent matching potential. Guigal suggests trying this wine with any game dish, red meats, or a cheese board. Enjoy now or cellar up to 5 years. Decant for an hour before and watch this develop in the glass!
ABOUT: Guigal was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis in the heart of the Cote Rotie appellation of the Northern Rhone. Now in the hands of the third generation, Philippe Guigal and his wife Eve, the family owns and produces many highly sought-after wines throughout both the North and Southern Rhone and are one of the most highly respected growers in the world. The vineyards around Cote Rotie were established around 2,400 years ago and there are reminders of this history in the Roman walls which still line the vineyards majestically overlooking the Rhone river below.
