Description

Mas Collet is a Spanish red wine from Celler de Capcanes, offering beautiful dark berry fruit flavours, and a hint of spice from time spent ageing in French oak barrels. Made in the Montsant vineyard appellation, it is a blend of the grapes Carinena (30%, this is known as Carignan in France), Garnacha (35%, Grenache) and Cabernet Sauvignon (35%). It’s a lovely wine and popular with lovers of full reds such as Rhones, Malbecs, Zinfandel and similarly flavourful examples.

TASTING NOTE: In the glass, this wine shows a dark ruby red colour with a black core. On the nose: ripe cherry, blackberry and blueberry aromas leap out of the glass, along with well-integrated hints of spice and toast from 9 months in French oak barrels. There is also a tiny touch of mineral or graphite, alongside the fruitier characters. On the palate: the flavours are ripe and concentrated and the wine is medium to full in body with smooth, rounded tannins, hedonistic berry fruit character and fresh acidity. It is 14.5% alcohol but very well-balanced and juicy.

FOOD PAIRING, STORAGE AND SERVICE: Thanks to the wine’s ripe, dark fruit profile and concentrated flavours, it pairs beautifully with dishes that have a similar depth. Try with a roasted lamb leg and aromatic herbs such as rosemary and thyme, served with mint sauce. It also complements savoury-sweet dishes like a meaty stew with prunes. For a vegetarian pairing, try sauteed vegetables with wild mushrooms or a caramelised onion tart with goats’ cheese, both would highlight the wine’s complex flavour profile. Serve at room temperature. Drink till 2029.

ABOUT: Celler de Capcanes was founded by five families who came together to produce wine in 1933. Nestled in the Serra de Llaberia Mountain range, the vineyards benefit from a diverse mix of soils, from clay and sand to slate and limestone, giving the wines distinct character and personality. The winery not only produces exceptional red and white wines but also makes its own olive oil from olives grown on the estate. Impressively, around 10% of their total wine production is kosher, requiring special techniques and strict adherence to Jewish dietary laws, including the use of certified kosher raw materials.
