Description

This classic wine from Franco Massolino in Barolo, Piedmont, shows exactly why Barolo has such a good reputation as being home to one of Italy’s best wines (Barolo is often known as the ‘King of Wines’). it was made from the Nebbiolo grape variety grown in vineyards in the Serralunga d’Alba districts of Barolo (where Massolino are based). This 2018 vintage is young with beautifully pure, fresh red fruit and floral aromas on the nose, and a hint of tea leaf and mixed spices. The palate is full, with rich, powerful fruit core and lashings of berry flavour. Decant the wine if you are drinking it now or it will easily last for 7-8 years+ if stored well. 14.5% ABV.

Barolo is in Piemonte (or Piedmont, literally meaning foot of the mountain (a nod to the nearby Alps), which is a wine region in Italy’s Northwest, tucked under Milan and just above Genoa. The name Barolo refers to both the wine, and the town Barolo itself. It’s also close to the town of Bra, home to the SlowFood movement, and it really is a food and wine destination, with its autumn truffle season, and excellent cheese and wines. A great place to visit if you are travelling through Italy. Franco Massolino and family have 23 hectares based mainly in Serralunga d’Alba, which makes particularly long-lived Barolo. See www.massolino.it for more. It’s still a young wine so pour into a jug or decant for a few hours before serving, or match it with steaks or heartier lentil dishes.
