Description

A unique and exciting take on the classic Gruner Veltliner, produced in the Petillant Naturel or ‘Pet-Nat” style of semi-sparkling wine by Matthais Hager in the Kamptal region of Austria, it’s a complete original!

TASTING NOTE: Light gold colour with delicate bubbles and showing a touch of cloudiness, as this wine is bottled unfiltered in the Pet-Nat style. On the nose: white pepper, citrus and ripe apple fruit, along with hints of ginger. On the palate: medium body, zesty and full of apple fruit and a hint of fresh yeast/dough alongside papaya, and tangerine. It’s dry, very crisp and full of character.

FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: This Pet-Nat is a very good aperitif but for a food pairing, we suggest smoked trout or Salmon, Asian-style pork dumplings, and crunchy vegetable tempura. A plate of mussels would also work well! Serve chilled at 7-10C and enjoy now or until spring 2024. 11% alcohol by volume.

ABOUT: The estate of Matthias Hager is based near the town of Mollands, in the northern Austrian region of Kamptal. With a total of 15.5 hectares (c 38 acres), owner/winemaker Matthias Hager began his career in 1992 as an apprentice on his parents’ farm and soon took on the winemaking operations. As of 2000, his interest shifted to practising organics and biodynamics in both the vineyard and winery and as of 2005 joining DEMETER, the International Association of Biodynamic Farmers. He works along with his brother Hermann, who’s the owner and head chef of the restaurant at the winery.
